For exactly 80 years, the Italian-language daily l’Adige has accompanied the history of Trentino – as a voice of the territory and a platform for exchange and collective memory.

Its origins date back to the post-war period: from the weekly Il Popolo Trentino (1945), a daily newspaper was established on 16 June 1946, which in 1951 adopted the name l’Adige. A defining figure was Flaminio Piccoli, editor-in-chief from 1946 to 1977 and the driving force behind the paper’s foundation. The project was supported by the Catholic community of Trentino and by Alcide De Gasperi. In the 1980s, the transfer of ownership to the Gelmi di Caporiacco family marked the beginning of a new phase. This was followed by the strengthening of its market leadership and expansion through additional publications. Since 2018, l’Adige has been part of the Athesia Group.

Today, under Editor-in-Chief Pierluigi Depentori and with a dedicated team, the newspaper remains a key point of reference for the region, successfully balancing tradition with technological and cultural change. This year’s anniversary programme reflects its close ties to the local community and includes events throughout Trentino, a special publication, a public running event, and a comprehensive photographic exhibition illustrating social and economic development through the newspaper’s archive. At the same time, historical articles are being republished and the archive is being digitised to ensure long-term access to this important cultural heritage.

One thing is certain: even after eight decades, l’Adige remains true to the spirit of its origins – close to the people and to everyday life in Trentino.
