Hunting and Customs

The book on hunting traditions in South Tyrol ranks among the most popular hunting publications of 2025. This was the result of a readers’ survey conducted by the German hunting magazine Wild und Hund. The non fiction title published by Athesia Tappeiner Verlag on behalf of the South Tyrolean Hunters’ Association achieved an excellent third place, placing it among the most significant hunting-related releases of 2025.

The book “Alte Hüte, gute Bräuche – Jägerbrauch in Südtirol”, written by Heinrich Aukenthaler, Ulrike Raffl, Nicol Santer and Simone Santer, offers a comprehensive exploration of hunting customs in South Tyrol. It accompanies hunters in the field, at gatherings and celebrations, and even on their final journey. Topics range from the language of hunters and silent communication through traditional twig symbols (Bruchzeichen), to the blowing of hunting horns, traditional hunting attire and jewellery. Equally important are the ethical attitude towards game and the spirit of camaraderie within the hunting community. The book documents and contextualises South Tyrol’s hunting traditions, preserving them for future generations. The ceremonial presentation of the certificate took place on 31 January 2026 at the Jagd & Hund trade fair in Dortmund. Vice Provincial Master of Hunters Dr Guido Marangoni accepted the award on behalf of the authors and the South Tyrolean Hunters’ Association.
